A PMI Lakeshore Chapter Dinner/Presentation

Managing Offshore IT Projects

Presentation Abstract

Offshore outsourcing of IT programs is receiving wider acceptance among corporations, business and IT executives. While outsourcing and offshoring strategies are being formulated by business executives, technologists and managers are increasingly being expected to deliver on such enterprise globalization strategies. Though best practices, theories and body-of-knowledge on managing projects are well established, there is a distinct void when it comes to practices on managing offshore projects.

Managing projects gets more nebulous when it involves orchestrating the efforts and schedules of individuals, teams and resources from across the globe. Executing and delivering IT application development and maintenance projects involves several layers of complexity; and the chain is only as strong as the weakest link. Project managers are being expected to address the challenges of managing time-and-space and across cultural and geographic boundaries and continue to seek best practices.

During the session, Mohan will use inputs from his recently published book "Offshoring IT Services" to set the context for managing globalized programs and projects. Mohan will lead the discussion on offshore outsourcing of IT Services and introduce an Offshoring Management Framework (OMF), to set the context for managing global IT projects. We will attempt to look at some of the intricacies of offshore outsourcing with a specific emphasis on managing and executing projects and initiatives.

The session will also present case studies and examples from the field and participants will be encouraged to share their experiences and observations for the collective learning by the group.
