A PMI Lakeshore Chapter Professional Development Event

Strategy Deployment for Value Driven Project Management

Four PDUs can be claimed by certified PMPs for attending this presentation.

Presentation Abstract

The business purpose of a project should be to help the organization achieve its strategic objectives.  Yes, you still need to be concerned about budget and about schedule.  However, an on-time, on-budget project which does not deliver to the strategy may not move your career forward.  So project managers need to better understand how what they are asked to do fits into the organization’s strategy and whether a project is likely to contribute to their personal success.   Even if achieving strategic success is not your direct responsibility, it is better to know where a particular project stands, than not to know.  I call this defensive project management – kind of like defensive driving.  An accident may not be your fault, but you are still stuck with many of its consequences.

There are three laws of Change Management:

  1. Change without progress is waste.
  2. Progress without change is an illusion.
  3. Change is always rewarding to someone, but not necessarily everyone, including you.

As a project manager you are significantly more likely to succeed personally, if your projects deliver change that represents progress and that is rewarding to everyone.

This half day session will present a framework for connecting strategic intent to functional execution. We will explore the following questions and provide tools for answering them:

  1. How do you connect a strategic intent to a functional process?
  2. How do you evaluate if a strategic intent has been achieved?
  3. How do you measure the degree to which it has been achieved?
  4. How do you determine what performance measures need to change in order to achieve the intent?
  5. How do you translate strategic measures to process measures?
  6. How do you systematically and verifiably determine if a particular project addresses a specific strategic intent?
  7. How can you improve program management by connecting to the strategy?
  8. How do you evaluate the likelihood of your project achieving business success and how do you ensure that you will be properly rewarded?

Project Delivery is a vertical process.  Value delivery is a horizontal process.  If you’re still trying to prove that project management delivers quantifiable value, you are wasting your time.  Projects delivery value indirectly.  So project value can’t be measured directly.  Learn why this is important and why your career progress depends on understanding the difference between direct and indirect value measurement.
